Summary
The collection contains a handwritten diary documenting the travels of three young Englishmen in America, who traveled from New York City to Niagara Falls, Chicago, St. Louis, New Orleans, Arkansas, and Florida during the fall, winter and spring 1884-1885. The group recorded their meetings with a number of important people including famous British jockey Frederick James "Fred" Archer (1857-1886) and Buffalo Bill Cody. During the trip, both Booth and Frizell participated in shooting contests with Cody and his WIld West Show. Additional loose items include a photograph (circa 1895), stationery (circa 1885), and an addressed and canceled mailing envelope (1884). Other paper ephemera pasted in the dairy include a Cunard Line list of saloon passengers on the R.M.S. Oregon for travel from Liverpool to New York, Oct. 25, 1884; American Jockey Club programme for Tuesday, November 4th 1884; the "Police Gazette" official programme for a boxing exhibition at Madison Square Garden, November 10, 1884; a flyer for a glove contest at Harry Hill's sporting theatre, November 13th 1884; an 18-page Catalogue of the Eden Musee in New York City
Biographical or historical data
Early in the morning of October 24, 1884, three educated, well-to-do young gentlemen in their 20's departed from The Grove, Sawston Village, Cambridgeshire, England and travelled to the port city of Liverpool. On October 25, 1884 they sailed aboard the Cunard Line's S. S. Oregon for Queensland, Ireland and landed in New York City, N.Y. on November 4th, 1884. The three friends were: Evelyn T. B. Booth (1861-1901), Reginald B. Heygate (1855-1903) and J. P. Frizell (1862-?). Evelyn Booth was born at Laragh House, Stratford, County Wicklow, Ireland and educated in England at Cambridge University. Booth eventually immigrated to America and applied for U.S. citizenship in Laramie County, Wyo. on May 2, 1888. He went into partnership with Buffalo Bill Cody, was a sport's promoter, and also part of the Klondike Gold Rush to Dawson, B.C., Canada in the late 1890s. Evelyn Booth died due to shock from burns received in a brush fire at St. Mary's Hospital on August 23, 1901 in Walla Walla, Wash. The second member of the group, Reginald Beaumont Heygate was born in Eaton Square, Belgravia, City of Westminster, London, England and attended King's College, Cambridge University where he received his B.A. (1880) and M.A. (1883). Heygate worked as the Assistant Private Secretary to Home Secretaries Sir William Harcourt (1880-1884), and Viscount Cross (1886). He never married and died on January 5, 1903 in Middlesex, England. The third and youngest member of the company was John Percival Frizell. Frizell was born in Belfast, Antrim County, Ireland and graduated from the King and Queen's College of Physicians in Dublin before emigrating to California in 1889. Frizell worked as a physician and surgeon in various locaitons, but appears to have settled finally in Yreka, Siskiyou County. He also speculated in mining in Northern California and joined various expeditions to the Klondike (1898), and Alaska (1900, 1903) that were reported in the newspapers of the day. He was married at least four times and had twin daughters..
