Biographical or historical data
Roe Duke Watson was born on November 14, 1915 in Alton, Ill and enlisted in the Army on March 17, 1941 at Tacoma, Wash. At the time of his enlistment he was unmarried and had completed four years of college studying forestry at the University of Mich. Since 1937 he had been working as a logger and surveyor in the logging industry in Wash. and was one of the first to volunteer for the ski troops. Watson trained at Ft. Lewis and Mount Rainier, Wash. and was part of the Columbia Ice Fields expedition. He later trained at Camp Hale, Colo. where he eventually became a Captain and Company Commander of Company I of the 86th Infantry Regiment. Watson was wounded in action in Italy and received the Bronze Star medal for his actions on February 24, 1945 near Mount Della Torraccia. He died on April 22, 2010 in Seattle, Wash.
