Biographical or historical data: Walter M. "Chappy" Chapman was born on April 16, 1921 and had been in the Army for two years before joining the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. as a 1st Lieutenant. He was assigned to Company F of the 86th Infantry Regiment, and also with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion of Regimental Headquarters. Chapman also served at Camp Swift, Tex. before being deployed to Italy. He received the Bronze Star medal for his actions near Sassomolare, Italy on March 5, 1945.
