Summary: The interview provides information and personal observations about Asa's volunteering for the 10th Mountain Division because he had been rejected from enlisting in the U.S. Navy because of poor eyesight. After basic training in Fl. he transferred to Camp Swift, Tex. where he practiced rifle firing. Asa also described landing in Naples, a battle to secure Sassamolare when his friend, John Compton was killed; being wounded in action at Montepastore during artillery fire; his recovery in a military hospital when the war in Europe was over; his life after the war and involvement with scouting and the American Youth Hostels. He also discusses John Compton and Compton's family donating money to build a church in Italy

Biographical or historical data: Warren J. Asa was born in Pana, Ill. on March 19, 1926. During basic training he volunteered for the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Swift, Tex. and was assigned to the Headquarters Company of the 1st Battalion of the 85th Infantry Regiment, but later served also with Headquarters and Company G of the 86th Infantry Regiment. Asa was wounded in action at Montepastore on April 17, 1945.
